Open and effective communication begins with the leader sharing information about him/ herself. What he/she stands for, what he/she plans to do and what he/she expects from other team members.

Leaders must have a vision and must communicate it often, widely and personally. That vision provides a direction for others to follow and so clearly if it is not shared openly and completely, then the team will be confused and so less effective.

Leaders should also set out clearly their expectations of others. It is not appropriate to point out after the event that things were not done to the standards expected if those standards were never communicated in the first place.

People expect their leaders to be consistent and not to keep changing their messages. It may be necessary for leaders to communicate the same message more than once in order for it be believed and understood.
